iPhone apps were a giant leap forward in how we use our mobile phones.  While smart phones were always meant to be more than just mobile phones it wasn’t until the iPhone came out that we really began using our phones for more than just email reading and talking.  Now we can track our daily caloric intake, get a map of the three miles we jogged this morning, visit our favorite websites powered by a 3G network – and about a few hundred thousand other things we can do via the app stores for iPhone and Android.  Video apps are also making a big showing and are proving to be very popular with consumers.  DIRECTV and Verizon both have free apps that allow users to browse programming and schedule their DVRs to record programs – all right from their iPhone or Android-powered phones.  Other apps let consumers use their phone as remote controls to watch programming on their computers or over their TV.  Androlib.com, a site to search for and get reviews of Android apps, lists 16 pages of TV apps that receive a rating of at least four out of five stars alone!

  • Online Video – Even HBO is doing it!

According to ABI Research, online video adoption has doubled in the past year and those that watch it are watching more on a daily, weekly or monthly basis.  Even HBO, which has historically shunned mediums outside of cable or satellite, has unveiled their HBO Go Website.  HBO says the site will offer up to four times the content available via HBO On Demand.  Unfortunately only Verizon FIOS and Comcast HBO subscribers are currently able to access this new HBO service.  The growth of online video is not lost on advertisers.  You may be surprised to know that ads today make up an astounding 12% of the total number of videos viewed online!

comScore, a provider of digital marketing intelligence, notes that over 177 million U.S. Internet users watched video content in June.  Tania Yuki, senior director of video and cross-media products at comScore says “Online video has evolved in recent years from a medium delivering primarily user-generated content to a channel that now delivers a great deal of professionally produced long-form content that is identical to what a viewer would find on TV,” consequently, more attention is rightfully being given to the monetization of the online video medium, particularly as it relates to the existing TV landscape.”

  • Market the apps – not the service – and change your image in the process

As telephone and cable companies evolve into broadband providers they have the advantage of leveraging the applications (apps) their customers crave. Apps such as picture sharing tools, use of social media sites like Twitter, Facebook and MySpace and, of course, YouTube – are giving companies the power to provide the desired user-generated and professional-grade content their customer’s are consuming every day.

The idea that consumers want to interact with content is no longer fringe but a reality. We see it with apps on our phones, apps and widgets on our computers and on our TV screens. This change is not lost on consumer electronics manufacturers – from cameras to camcorders and heart rate monitors to baby monitors – we are uploading, downloading, emailing and sharing via our broadband connections and accessing on any device that has a screen. This revolution of content that we as consumers desire is a boon for broadband providers. Companies that provide innovative solutions to accessing this content are the ones that will keep and generate new customers.

This brings me to image. We all have one but for some companies they still may be thought of as the telephone company or the TV/cable provider. In a sense – companies with compelling broadband services are now multi-content and multi-screen providers. If you are in the business of delivering broadband and your customers and potential customers don’t look to you for their converging needs, then you may want to reconsider your marketing plan and start marketing the apps.

Several members of “The Skitterati” (our internal nickname for the Skitter team) are on the way to Seattle this weekend.  Skitter, Inc. will be on hand for OPASTCO’s 2010 Summer Convention and Trade Show, which gets underway Sunday afternoon at The Westin Seattle.  Look for us at tables 8 and 9 in the exhibit area.  Also on the agenda is a presentation by Skitter, Inc.’s President and Co-Founder Robert Saunders.  Saunders will participate in a panel discussion as a part of the management break-out sessions on Tuesday, July 27  from 8 till 10 a.m.

The panel session, to be moderated by GVNW Consulting‘s Dana Baker,  is titled “Putting Technology to Work:  Taking Advantage of Broadband Service Opportunities.”  Also participating are Raymond Henagan of Rock Port Telephone Company and Randy Trost of GVNW Consulting.  Presented by the OPASTCO Associate Member Committee, the panel will offer case-study reviews of three emerging examples of the service options that broadband offers OPASTCO members eager to exploit new and perhaps unconventional opportunities: over-the-top (OTT) video, data storage and cloud computing.  Discussion will include business and financial insight from OPASTCO associate members, as well as telco operating and network experiences.  We’re handling the “OTT video” portion of the discussion.

If you’re going to be in Seattle for this important telecom event, grab a cup of Starbuck’s and come take a look at Skitter.TV while you’re there.

  • Skitter.TV Joins Occam Networks’ Partner Program

Occam Packet Access Network (OPAN) Alliance Welcomes Emerging Video Solution Provider

Skitter, Inc. has become a member of the Occam Packet Access Network (OPAN) alliance.   The partner program outlines customer support, on-going testing, and joint sales and marketing activities that can occur between the two companies.  The partnership highlights the need for validated video solutions in the growing over-the-top (OTT) video arena.

“Developing TV service strategies that include OTT is a high priority for many of our telco customers, and Occam Networks is committed to understanding and providing tested solutions that will help our customers succeed,” said David Spence, Occam Networks director of business development.  “Working together, we can better advise and support customers.”

Occam Networks’ interoperability certification process involves analyzing video stream bandwidth in both constant bitrate (CBR) and variable bitrate (VBR) scenarios, testing head-end video equipment for network compatibility and performance, and documenting network configuration recommendations.

“With a number of customers in various stages of installation of the Skitter.TV platform, we were committed to evaluating the solution in order to assist them with deployment,” said Juan Vela, director of solutions marketing and strategy for Occam Networks.  “We look forward to the successful deployment of the Skitter.TV solution in broadband networks powered by the BLC 6000 MSAP.”

Robert Saunders, Skitter.TV president and co-founder, said that the partnership with Occam Networks will help service providers accelerate deployment at a critical moment in the telecommunications industry.  “Service providers are facing a near-universal need to add value to their broadband offerings in light of increasing competition,” Saunders said.  “Joining the OPAN partner program is a major step in assuring that Skitter.TV and Occam Networks solutions can help accelerate successful deployment of OTT video while helping telco’s improve customer loyalty and add new revenue via TV services.”

Skitter.TV is a Silver Sponsor of the Occam Networks Users’ Group Conference (ONUG 2010), being held this week at the Capital Hilton Hotel in Washington, DC.  Skitter, Inc. President and Co-founder Robert Saunders will speak during a panel discussion on over-the-top (OTT) video on Thursday, July 1 at 1:00 p.m.  The panel discussion will answer questions such as: Who is experimenting with OTT? What benefits are service providers seeing in OTT? How long will the transition take? Also participating on the panel is Skitter.TV customer Hill Country Telephone, who will share details on their TV services strategy and their experiences with Skitter.TV.

  • Social networking and Web video power today’s Internet

    May 18th 2010

    By: Tanya

My last post referenced eMarketer survey data on what kinds of sites Internet users visit to get information to help them make purchasing decisions.  Of course, Web surfers look for more than product or service information.  Increasingly, consumers are turning to the Web for entertainment and for “how-to” information—often in the form of short videos. New research on the daily online and offline activities of Internet users highlights the power of the Web for both entertainment and social interaction.

    http://www.emarketer.com/Article.aspx?R=1007647

As you can see, watching TV, whether through your television set or on a computer screen, is a daily routine.  Nielsen recently reported that about 131 million Americans watch online video, and that they spend, on average, about 3 hours a month doing so.  An astounding 33.2 billion videos were viewed in December 2009 by U.S. Internet users, according to comScore.

We all like to watch TV.  Most of us also like watching short do-it-yourself or how-to clips when trying to figure out how to synch our smart phone with our POP3 contacts or how to get our voicemail messages through our email account(s).  Fact is, telcos should be jumping on the opportunity to present answers and provide value to their customers by creating short “how-to” videos addressing common questions as well as how to take advantage of all the features your broadband products provide.  Don’t believe me?  Just type in “how to sync” on YouTube and you will quickly get a sense of how much content it already out there.  Now it’s time for you to create your own YouTube channel for your company and to begin uploading how-to videos for your customers.

It’s important for telco’s to keep in mind that video services are about more than traditional IPTV.  Customers want converged entertainment services—short form Web video served over the top combined with traditional live TV and video on demand.

  • Hill Country Telephone Cooperative Completes Phase Two of Skitter.TV Deployment

    May 10th 2010

    By: Laura

Skitter, Inc. today announced the completion of Phase Two deployment of the Skitter.TV converged entertainment services platform at Hill Country Telephone Cooperative (Hill Country), headquartered in Ingram, Texas.  To date, 54 Skitter Acclaim™ video encoders have been installed in preparation for a total linear (live) TV lineup of 70 cable/satellite network channels and 42 broadcast TV channels from network affiliates in nearby Austin and San Antonio.  In addition to Hill Country’s linear TV channels, the Tier Two service provider will take advantage of Skitter.TV’s converged media environment to offer over-the-top (Web video) content, video on demand, digital audio and user-generated content as a part of a unified entertainment experience.

Hill Country LogoThe co-op expects to complete its installation of the Skitter.TV platform this summer and plans to begin external beta testing of the service shortly thereafter.  Hill Country expects to launch its entertainment services in late 2010.

Hill Country serves 2,900 square miles across 14 counties in central Texas, providing service to approximately 14,000 telephone customers and 5,200 Internet subscribers.  Like many telecom service providers, Hill Country turned to entertainment services as a key strategy to expand operations beyond traditional landline phone service.  The Skitter.TV service will be marketed as a stand-alone offering and as part of a number of service bundles designed to increase customer satisfaction and loyalty and ultimately increase network revenues.  The co-op also offers monitored security services and mobile technical support services to residential and business customers, as stand-alone and bundled offerings.

    Delbert Wilson

Hill Country General Manager Delbert Wilson

“Skitter.TV is key to our on-going strategy to diversify our business,” said Delbert Wilson, Hill Country’s general manager. “We didn’t want to duplicate a typical TV service with 300 channels.  With Skitter.TV, we have a unique offering with live TV programming we specifically designed for the tastes and preferences of the communities we serve, supplemented by unlimited Web video and advanced features that make TV better.  I’m excited about offering the Texas Hill Country an entertainment services product that will be more affordable, easy to use and easy to service, as well as being portable to different screens so that our members can watch what they want, where they want and how they want.”

Hill Country’s channel lineup includes a mix of high definition and standard definition content.  While specific channel package offerings and pricing strategies are not yet announced, satellite network content licensing is being pursued and retransmission rights for off-air network affiliates are underway.  Hill Country is also pursuing licensed content from leading networks that include ESPN, Discovery Networks, CNN, Fox News and a number of other popular news, sports, lifestyle, and special interest channels.  Several Spanish-language networks are included in the lineup. The co-op chose to include broadcast TV affiliate channels from both Austin and San Antonio, its two nearest major metropolitan TV markets.

    Larry Pechacek

Hill Country Business Development Manager Larry Pechacek

“I am convinced that Skitter.TV is the best platform for service providers like Hill Country who serve large rural areas,” said Larry Pechacek, Hill Country’s business development manager. “The needs are different in rural America than in urban markets, from both a network perspective and a cultural perspective.  In terms of infrastructure, Skitter.TV doesn’t burden plant operations, and won’t require in-home installation services for most of our members.

“From a cultural perspective, Skitter.TV gives us the ability to put together a unique content package, and can also support local content that we will produce in the future,” Pechacek continued.  “For example, we are working with several of our local radio stations and will be including their Internet streams using Skitter.TV’s digital audio features.  Cable and satellite TV services often offer satellite radio, but local radio gives us a unique audio feature that our competitors don’t support.”

Kerry Sutton, Manager of Competitive Businesses at Hill Country, adds, “At Hill Country we strive to produce leading edge services in which individuals, businesses and whole communities alike can enjoy and benefit. We see Skitter.TV as a solid platform on which to build that next service. When completed, we envision the best of local and satellite TV, over the top web content as well as other local and community generated radio, advertising, and video content all to be available via the Skitter.TV interface. Being “good enough” is not good enough for Hill Country. We know we must be better than all of the alternatives and we believe Skitter.TV will provide that opportunity that we are looking for.” Read More

  • Why small telcos should be leveraging social networking tools

    May 7th 2010

    By: Tanya

It’s not just college kids anymore – your employees are tweeting about their day.  Customers and prospects are sharing information not just about their weekend plans, but about why they should buy a just-released smart phone and what they like or dislike about a particular service.

Do you have a helpdesk?  How much time is spent on lower-value calls or high volume issues?  Why not let your customers access your blog, Facebook page or Twitter  account to quickly find the answers they need from the questions that have already been asked?

Are you still wondering whether tweeting or friending is really going to increase sales or establish customer loyalty?  Consider some recent survey results by eMarketer:

Media Used Frequently by US Internet Users

The numbers do not lie.  If you are using the Web, you are more and more likely to depend on social networks, message boards, user-generated content and blogs to help you make purchasing decisions and find answers to your questions.  As a small telco, you do not have to lead the discussion, but you need to be a part of the conversation.

Need a couple more reasons?  Verizon Wireless has almost 15,000 followers on its official Twitter feed and AT&T has countless accounts with thousands of followers.  These two companies are sharing news, views and providing customer care – more importantly, they are connecting and relating to their customers.  If the 700 pound gorillas can do it, you can bet as a small telco you are well positioned to provide value to your customers by leveraging social media tools.  While we are on the subject, don’t forget to visit the Skitter Twitter page.
